TPA Applauds GOP Senators Resisting FTC Overreach in the Energy Sector WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, a group of Republican senators wrote a letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) urging the agency to reject calls to target mergers and acquisitions in the energy industry. The senators, led by @SenTedCruz (R-Texas), @LeaderMcConnell (R-Ky.), and @LindseyGrahamSC (R-S.C.), reminded the FTC that “mergers must be assessed under a fair and unbiased standard grounded in sound economics and law that protects American consumers, and does not impose policy preferences to further political ends.” David Williams, president of the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA), offered the following comment: “TPA is grateful that Republican lawmakers are speaking out forcefully against what would be clear and disastrous agency overreach. It is imperative that the FTC opposes ideologically driven attempts to use antitrust enforcement as a substitute for environmental regulation. Climate science and carbon-emissions regulation have nothing to do with the FTC’s duties as a competition regulator. Congress has tasked other agencies with these responsibilities, and FTC mission creep in this area should be strongly opposed. “Allowing these factors to distort the FTC’s economic analysis threatens to raise energy prices on millions of Americans. This should be intolerable to an agency that is tasked with combating consumer harms. This FTC has demonstrated an eagerness to regulate outside of its traditional scope of authorities, but a decision to begin incorporating environmentalism into its work would open an entirely new frontier of agency mission creep.” @tpapres
@Protectaxpayers @tedcruz Wow. The dreaded letter. "Sounds" like they're doing their job. But are they? Meh. I have my doubts.
