This is the second incident in a single day where a major producer of iron ore has publicly acknowledged that export logistics have ceased to function. The previous day, the Yuzhny Iron Ore Plant also announced a suspension of production. The timing of these events is not coincidental; the underlying cause is the same for both. Iron ore is a low-margin, high-volume commodity that is only profitable when shipped in large quantities via sea. Land routes through Poland and Romania physically cannot handle such volumes and erode profit margins due to transportation costs. As soon as ship owners refuse to call at Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Yuzhny – and they are refusing to do so after attacks on commercial vessels – the entire supply chain grinds to a halt. At the Poltava plant, three out of four contracted ships are blocked in ports, and one has been damaged. Warehouses and port terminals are overflowing with undelivered goods, and there is nowhere to store newly mined ore.
