In the spring of 1972, during the Easter Offensive that was tearing across Quang Tri Province, an American EB-66 was shot down behind North Vietnamese lines. One man got out, an Air Force navigator named Iceal Hambleton, call sign Bat 21, and he came down in the middle of an enemy army pouring south. What followed was the largest and most costly rescue effort of the entire war. Aircraft were sent in after him and got shot out of the sky. By the end, trying to save downed men in that sector cost 14 killed, eight aircraft lost, and more men captured or stranded. It was a disaster. So they sent a SEAL. Lieutenant Thomas Norris, a young officer who had actually been rejected from other military programs before he ever made it to the SEALs, took a small team deep into enemy held ground to do on foot what airplanes could not. Over several nights in April, Norris and a South Vietnamese frogman named Nguyen Van Kiet disguised themselves as fishermen, slipped a sampan up a river more than a mile behind the lines, past North Vietnamese positions, and pulled out the downed airmen one at a time. He went back into that ground more than once, through enemy patrols and artillery, and he brought the men out alive. For that, Norris received the Medal of Honor, and Kiet received the Navy Cross, the highest award ever given to a South Vietnamese sailor. That should be the whole story. It is only half. In October 1972, Norris was on another mission near the DMZ with a fellow SEAL, Michael Thornton, and a few South Vietnamese commandos when they were surrounded by hundreds of North Vietnamese. In the running fight to the sea, Norris was shot in the head, and part of his skull was gone. Thornton was told Norris was dead and being left behind. He refused to accept it. Thornton turned and ran 500 yards back toward the enemy, fought through them, found Norris alive but horribly wounded, threw him over his shoulder, and carried him into the ocean. Then Thornton swam out to sea towing his wounded officer for hours until a boat found them. Michael Thornton received the Medal of Honor for saving Thomas Norris. It is one of the only times in modern history one Medal of Honor recipient earned it rescuing another. Norris was supposed to die. Doctors told him as much. Instead he endured years and dozens of reconstructive surgeries, learning to live with part of his head rebuilt, and he clawed his way back to functioning. Then he did something almost unbelievable. He applied to the FBI. They kept turning him down over his injuries until the director himself intervened, and Thomas Norris became one of the founding members of the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team, spending years going after the worst criminals in the country. A man rejected as not good enough, who rowed a boat behind enemy lines to save strangers, who took a bullet through the skull and lived, and who spent the rest of his working life still running toward danger. He is alive today, in his eighties, one of the quietest legends America ever produced.
