FOR CONTEXT (March 7, 2024) Austin, Texas - Watch: Bodycam footage shows Austin police save choking child Two Austin police officers are being honored by the department for acting quickly to save the life of a choking child. Around 4:30 p.m. Feb. 16, officers responded to an apartment in Northeast Austin where 4-year-old William Martinez was choking, according to the Austin Police Department. In body camera footage, Officer Dalton Schroeder uses a LifeVac suction device to clear the obstruction, and Officer Jason Wright delivers blows to the child's back. When the boy begins breathing normally, he gives the officers a thumbs up and a high-five, and even gives Schroeder a bear hug. Schroeder bought the LifeVac with his own money in case this kind of situation ever arose, APD said. At a news conference with the two officers and their supervisor, the boy's mother said she took little William to a hospital for a check-up a few weeks later, and medical staff determined he had been choking on his own saliva. "It makes me sad and at the same time thankful, with these two officers that got there really fast, that my son is still with me," Guadalupe Romero said after rewatching the body camera footage Wednesday at the news conference. She said she attempted to stop her son's choking but called 911 when his lips turned purple and he tried to lie on the floor with his eyes closed. The officers were recognized by the department and presented William with toys to take home. #copied
