A lot of tech companies think they’re customer-obsessed. But how many know their customers intimately and design backwards from customers’ most pressing needs? We’ve got more behind-the-scenes footage here of a live meeting of me digging into a customer's needs. 👇
You must think forward. It hurts the brain. But you must.
Selfishly focusing on “what I want,” although increasingly popular in our culture, doesn’t create value or lead to lasting happiness. Meaningful work—work that satisfies our souls—focuses on others and produces for others. It serves others.
If you try to play in anything and everything, that means you probably won’t win. How do you increase your chances of success? Pick your battles. Find your niche. You want to pick a form you're going to win in. For me that’s the real estate form in tech.
True entrepreneurs always CREATE. We need to do more than just blow the competition out of the water. The next time you hear someone talking about making bags of money, think about recreating the world and how much bigger of an aspiration that is.

Who is having the greatest impact and influence in today’s society? Entrepreneurs. Why? Because they are the ones our society most admires. We need entrepreneurs who seek to truly serve other people and not simply their own interests.
Don’t be like a bull that keeps coming at a concrete wall that won’t budge. Find a way to the other side. You’re going to make mistakes, but see them as beneficial when they are acknowledged with course correction and communicated to promote organizational learning.
There's true entrepreneurship and then there's "selfishship." "Selfishship" is about being cool, having a yacht, driving a fancy car, etc. I always got the sense that a lot of wannabe entrepreneurs prefer to be free from a duty to serve. I want to do the opposite.
We need an educational system that trains people how to think. The one we have now essentially trains people how not to think. Graduates come out scared to express a different point of view. Simply shouting over or ignoring those who disagree with you gets you nowhere.
I bought a couple billion dollars of real estate. That was one of my first bigger plays in business. But I realized that tech is even more scalable and has a bigger impact on people. That’s how I went from real estate to tech. To empower people and elevate humanity.
New tech leadership is a monumental task and we know it's going to take us 10, 20, 30 years to do this, but we are committed completely because we believe this is extremely important for humanity.
Over 2 billion people use Facebook every day. It’s a network effect business. A network effect means a product is more valuable as more people use it. We don’t need another Facebook. We need new tech leadership who are leading the way to truly serve people and elevate humanity.
The future will be clear when it hits the history books. Until then, we execute based on instinct, heuristics, and whatever data we can grab. Cutting-edge info is largely inside the heads of those actually doing the work. This info has not yet hit the blogs, books, or podcasts.
