Gary Lineker tells Charlotte Edwardes in the Guardian: “If you lean to one side or the other, the levels of attack are extraordinary. How could it be controversial to want peace? I just don’t understand it. You don’t need to be Islamophobic to condemn Hamas, or antisemitic to condemn Israel. But at the moment it’s just awful. Awful.” When talking about the numbers of children killed, he says, “I feel sick.” @chedwardes @GaryLineker theguardian.com/football/2024/…
@Peston Hmm if only he’d condemn Hamas. His opinion may be listened to if he didn’t lean so far left (hypocritically) he’s almost horizontal
@Peston He's not wrong is he? Shameful that a former footballer has a better understanding of the situation than our ethnic cleansing supporting government.
@Peston Thing for me is this is basically the feeling most have. All attacks are vile. Not saying either is right or wrong. Just the whole thing is a heartbreaking situation when you think about innocent people dying across the world in all attrocites.
@Peston Gary is quite correct. Neither party to the controversy can or will prevail in a manner acceptable to our modern world society. And thinking otherwise is both shallow and totally without merit. It explains why so many, including Gary, avoid commenting otherwise.
@Peston I get where @GaryLineker is coming from but there is little or no evidence that condemning Hamas is considered Islamophobic in the UK but plenty of evidence that criticising Israel is considered antisemitic.
@Peston Everyone wants peace. Sometimes marching and waving placards saying 'stop this!' doesn't bring peace. I say this as someone who has done so - but as part of a comprehensive campaign against a Bad Thing, not as a 'makes me feel good' futile gesture.
