More than a decade after the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston's landmark research exposed the extraordinary racial wealth gap in Greater Boston, new statewide research revisited by The Boston Globe shows just how persistent that disparity remains. Approximately 70% of white households own their homes, compared with 39% of Black households and 32% of Latino households. Even more telling, roughly 40% of renters have zero or negative net wealth, compared with just 1% of homeowners. The causes of these disparities extend far beyond housing, and increasing homeownership alone will not close the wealth gap. But more than half a century after the Fair Housing Act of 1968, the racial homeownership gap remains remarkably persistent. The findings reinforce an important reality: access to quality housing, pathways to ownership, and the ability to remain in communities as they grow all play an important role in long-term economic mobility.
