Two spotted Spider Mites continue to plague area high tunnel and tomato greenhouse growers. This grower released predatory mites to keep spider mite populations under control, but was unsuccessful.
Ghost spot caused by the aborted infection of spores from Botrytis cinerea is being observed in high tunnel and greenhouse tomatoes in our area. Increase air circulation where possible and use fungicides prophyllactically.
Powdery mildew is being observed across PA in cucurbit crops. Protectant fungicides should be deployed to prevent new infections. Please rotate FRAC codes to prevent fungicide resistance and always follow the pesticide label.
Elevated soil pH tying up iron coupled with a two-spotted spider mite explosion requires immediate intervention by grower. Acid injection through the drip plus a foliar miticide application should fix both.
Squash bugs are laying eggs on the undersides of cucurbit leaves in Duncansvile. Six mature adults were found on a single plant and 2-3 clusters of eggs are being observed on almost every leaf.
Slow growth, poor color, and abscising yellow leaves may mean that you are not providing enough nitrogen to your hydroponic lettuce crop. Many growers do not regularly calibrate their EC meters and a few faulty readings can lead them down a perilous path.
Late blight continues to spread in Pennsylvania tomato fields despite prophylactic applications of protectant and translaminar fungicides.
Yellow striped armyworms are being observed feeding on tomato plants in area high tunnels. As these caterpillars mature they will begin to feed on tomato fruits in the high tunnel.
Farm visits in the Tyrone area of Pennsylvania today (September 3, 2019) revealed a late blight outbreak on a commercial vegetable farm. Cool nights coupled with heavy dew will cause this disease to spread quickly on unprotected tomato and potato plants.
