“I must beg you to dismiss form your minds anything you may have heard or read about the prisoners and to abandon all prejudice toward either side, and to approach the case with absolutely open minds carefully and impartially.” Oscar #Wilde's first trial opens, 26 April 1895
“A song of Enchantment I sang me there, In a green-green wood, by waters fair, Just as the words came up to me I sang it under the wild wood tree. ” Walter de la Mare, born 25 April 1873 #walterdelamare #poem

“Such joy a hundred times a day was mine To see at every bend of the road the face Of Nature different. And oft I sat To hear the lark from his first twitter pass To greater things as he soared nearer heaven; Or to the throstle, singing nearer home.” W.H. Davies, b. 20 April 1871
“I have seen a thousand graves opened, and always perceived that whatever was gone, the teeth and hair remained of those who had died with them. Is not this odd? They go the very first things in youth and yet last the longest in the dust.” Lord #Byron, died 19 April 1824
“Made a low circular mount round the great oak in the mead, & Turfed it. Sowed more China-asters on the end of the Cantelupe-bed. Perfect summer.” Gilbert White, 18 April 1761 #gilbertwhite #selborne #gardening
“Today I am 34, a dull thing to consider. How little done, Oh Lord, & how much gone through? How many changes, how many failures? Is it fate, is it fault? Will it end, or must it end me? A bad cold on my chest with pain therein these 3 days.” Ford Madox Brown, 16 April 1855

“ ...the dead Returning lightly dance: Whatever the road bring To me or take from me, They keep me company With their pattering, Crowding the solitude Of the loops over the downs, Hushing the roar of towns And their brief multitude.” Edward Thomas, k.i.a. 9 April 1917
“Walked to Chathill Station: a cartwheel, a rainbow, new boots, and at Chathill the sailor boy who had been catching crabs. A very happy day indeed.” E.M. Forster, 8 April 1904 #emforster
“—Was it for this That one, the fairest of all Rivers, lov’d To blend his murmurs with my Nurse’s song, And from his alder shades and rocky falls, And from his fords and shallows, sent a voice That flow’d along my dreams?” William #Wordsworth, born 7 April 1770

What happens in the steam should stay in the steam! Fanny, the frustrated nurse-wife of Robert Louis Stevenson, pens an appeal in 1875 to Timothy Rearden a young San Francisco lawyer and littérateur she'd befriended, who later became a judge and married.
People are the only interesting things there are in the world, but one has to come to the desert to find it out, and until you are in the desert, you never know how un-interesting you are yourself. – Willa Cather, April 26 1912
To send to friends! Bought 10 of these charming pcs of Q. Blake's drawing of the Great Poet sitting on his Newfoundland dog, Boatswain, constant & beloved companion, nursed by Lord B as he died of rabies: "in life the firmest friend, The first to welcome, foremost to defend" #dog
@PParkerWriting @classicpenguins Excellent! Reading about his immensely popular Dickens seminars in the 60s and 70s, I always wonder if students at UEA quite realised how heroic Dyson had been, not least for that letter in the Times. The world cries out for a biography. Look forward to reading Some Men in London
@PParkerWriting Despite any literary snobbishness towards him, I will be for ever grateful for his wonderful atmospheric poems learnt by heart at school 🩷
@PParkerWriting Sally festing's bio of Gertrude Jekyll (Archive.org) and Wayne F. Cooper 'Claude McKay: Rebel Sojourner...' (Google Books) are very useful. His pic was from the first.
@alchemiebooks @PParkerWriting Will have to read the Sally Festing bio. Many thanks for the thread!
Jekyll took up vegetarianism and Buddhism, living "a philosopher's life of plain living and high thinking." He was also a mentor to the Jamaican-born bisexual poet Claude McKay, who became a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance. 7/8
Remarkably, Walter Jekyll has been almost completely overlooked by Robert Louis Stevenson's biographers, who seem unaware of the work Claude McKay's biographers in sketching out Jekyll's life and – importantly in the light of Jekyll & Hyde – his otherness. 8/8
A firm upholder of class hierarchies, he also took the Saviour to task: "Jesus did not care about social order: he disliked the upper classes." As Jekyll told a friend: "English gentlemen have always liked their peasants: it's the ambitious middle class we cannot tolerate." 5/8
In the wake of Oscar Wilde's trials, in 1895 Jekyll quit England forever, moving to Jamaica with his long time companion, Lieutenant-Colonel Ernest Boyle. There as a planter, he became interested in the Island's folklore, publishing 'Jamaican Song and Story' in 1907. 6/8
In 1905, Jekyll published 'The Bible Untrustworthy', a critique which included pointing out it wasn't sodomy that led to the destruction of the eponymous city. 4/8
"I always identified myself with the lost," Jekyll once wrote. In 1879 he abandoned his vocation of Anglican priest, emigrated to Malta, then studied singing in Milan, before returning to England. He befriended Robert Louis Stevenson, who would borrow his surname. 2/8
Stevenson's homosexual allegory of 1886, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, likely contained more of Jekyll than just his surname. Stevenson was already friends with a string of gay men, including Horatio Brown, Edmund Goss, and JA Symonds. 3/8
Walter Jekyll (1849–1929) was the younger brother of celebrated gardener designer Gertrude. His life was one in which a spiritual quest, and seeking homosexual refuge, were tightly entwined. A thread. 1/8 @RLSte @RLSMuseum @claire_harman
