Excellent article by @PJordanAnderson on how the political philosophy of Thomas Hobbes (and others) can help us understand our current technological moment surrounding "AI" and possible paths forward

Philosophers have always been suspicious of images on account of their capacity to deceive; there is no guarantee that an image is a trustworthy vehicle to knowledge of the real thing it represents.
Traditionally, the meaning of an image—a painting or a photograph, say—has been tied to the deliberation of the image-maker: what judgments went into its creation? What choices had to be made?
AI-video platforms have abandoned even the pretense that an image harbors either truth or meaning.
I’m thinking I might try and develop this in a longer post.
Thesis I’ll be exploring in my next essay: Modern algorithms are mechanisms for coordinating data in order (in theory) to make human life easier/better by providing answers and making decisions which no individual otherwise has access to. Algorithms are descendants of modern nation states, which are mechanisms for coordinating people in order to preserve and protect the lives of their citizens by forming a single massive entity which is much stronger and more capable than individuals themselves.
Understanding what is at stake with AI requires that we situate it within the context of earlier forms of social and political organization, with all their attendant complexities.
Not my most sophisticated take, but I keep thinking that the message of the medium of these new AI-generated video platforms is best summed up as lol nothing matters🫠.
It seems likely that if Jacques Ellul was alive today, he would be telling us that the reason AI might get out of our control is because technique is already out of our control.
There are very few theological matters on which I’m willing to pontificate, especially publicly. But I am comfortable saying that, whatever God is, it definitely isn’t this.

"The dominant worldview seems to be: Why worry about actually learning anything when you can get an A for outsourcing your thinking to a machine?"
