Starting my journey as a PGCE Physical Education Trainee Teacher in secondary education has challenged me more than I expected, in the best possible way. So far, I’ve had to stretch my subject knowledge far beyond football, my main sport. PE demands breadth, not comfort zones. I’ve also had to reset my mindset. In PE, I’m not developing elite athletes like I do in football. My role is to keep pupils active, improve game understanding, encourage problem-solving, and make sport accessible for everyone. One of the biggest learning curves has been adaptive teaching, having progressions, regressions, and adaptations ready so all pupils have equal access to learning, whether they’re gifted and talented, SEND, or lower-ability. Surprisingly, the sport I’ve improved the most in is Table Tennis. I’d never played it before in my life. But maybe that’s why my subject knowledge has grown so much, I knew it was an area I had to learn properly. I’ve learned that teaching and coaching are very different, even though they share many transferable skills. Lessons aren’t about preparing for a match; they’re about developing technical understanding and tactical awareness, underpinned by clear, simple learning objectives. Another key area of growth has been identifying and addressing misconceptions. Clear demonstrations, broken down step-by-step, have been essential to support understanding for all pupils. My questioning has improved massively too, allowing me to check factual understanding, but also explore pupils’ tactical thinking and opinions. My biggest lesson of all? Lesson planning. My plans used to divert like the number 6 bus route. Now, my objectives are clearer, my lessons are tighter, and pupils can mentally digest what they’re learning far more effectively. In a short space of time, I’ve had to develop and sustain so many areas, guided by constant feedback from expert professionals in teaching. I’m grateful for a few weeks to reset before my next placement and excited to continue making a positive impact on schools and, most importantly, on pupils through my lessons. 📚⚽🏓 Growth. Reflection. Progress.

3 days to go. 1 day left at university and 2 days left at my current placement, including a presentation to my tutor and university link tutor. Lesson plans completed, targets met ✅ Christmas drinks, Christmas breakfast and lunch to look forward to 🎄 Then it’s two weeks of quality time with the family before the next placement begins. Still waiting to find out where that next placement will be, but staying patient, focused, and proud of the progress made so far.

Highlight of the week. During my Year 9 tutor period, we marked Anti-Bullying Week with an honest and eye-opening discussion. I posed one simple question that opened the door to a much bigger conversation: “Is it easier to fit in with the crowd or stand out from the crowd?” We explored real situations young people face every day: • A fight breaks out — do you cheer, record it, or walk away? • Two pupils start harmless banter — but when it turns into a 5-against-1 pile-on, do you join in or stop it? • A humiliating post appears on social media — when you scroll through the comments, do you add negativity or choose to uplift someone instead? What struck me most was the honesty. Many admitted that “fitting in” often feels easier, even when it’s not the right choice. But we talked about how real courage is shown when you stand out by doing what is right, not what is popular. We discussed how one positive comment can shift the whole atmosphere. How one person stepping in can break the cycle. And how doing nothing is still a choice, one that affects others. This is what Anti-Bullying Week is about: Building a culture where kindness isn’t the exception, it’s the standard. Where bravery isn’t loud, it’s consistent. Where standing out for the right reasons becomes something to be proud of. Proud of the Year 9s for engaging so maturely and for recognising the power they have to influence the world around them. Small conversations. Big impact. Let’s keep pushing for a safer, kinder, more respectful school community.

Another brilliant week completed on placement. Every day continues to bring new learning, challenges and moments of growth. This week I had the chance to observe some fantastic lessons across different year groups, gaining valuable insight into how experienced teachers manage behaviour, set high expectations and create a positive learning environment. I also had the opportunity to lead a number of my own lessons, focusing on developing pupils’ teamwork, communication and skill execution. Seeing the pupils engage, respond to feedback and make progress has been incredibly rewarding. It’s been inspiring to work alongside such supportive teachers who encourage me to keep reflecting, adapting and improving my practice. Each observation and lesson taught feels like another step towards becoming the teacher and role model I aspire to be. Feeling grateful, motivated and excited for what’s to come next week.

Taught my first full lesson today as part of my Secondary PE PGCE 🏫⚽️ Year 9 Fitness class — exploring “Why do professional athletes fitness test before training?” I overestimated the group’s ability at first but adapted quickly. Pupils worked in teams of 4–5 with roles: Coach, Analyst, Official, Reporter — promoting teamwork, leadership & ownership 💪 Not all 8 tests were completed, but engagement was high & questioning sparked great discussions on fairness, accuracy & performance. Big takeaway — before pupils can lead, they need clear modelling, structure & routines. This week on my PGCE journey was ITAP week (Intense Training and Practice) and the focus was all about how teachers establish routines that shape a positive and safe learning environment. From the simple yet powerful act of greeting pupils at the door, to how we teach, intervene, and maintain consistency, these routines build trust, predictability, and emotional security, all of which are essential for effective learning. I was fortunate enough to observe how routines look in two completely different settings: 🌳 Out in Shere Village during a Year 7 field trip — where learning extended beyond the classroom walls and routines had to adapt dynamically to an outdoor environment. 🏓 And inside the sports hall during a Table Tennis lesson, where structure, pace, and clear expectations were key to keeping pupils engaged and on task. Both experiences offered valuable insight into how teacher behaviour, tone, and organisation directly influence pupil focus and enjoyment — regardless of the setting. I also had the chance to plan my first lesson, which I’ll be leading next week! ✨ Microteaching Reflection – Year 7 PE (Rugby) ✨ This week I stepped into a very different environment from what I’m used to. For many years I’ve coached in football, mainly working with children, teenagers, and adults who want to be there often switched on, motivated, and talented. You might think I was about to say the Year 7s weren’t switched on, but actually, they were fantastic. The challenge for me was applying my coaching methods through a completely different lens. Coaching a sport I don’t know as deeply meant I had to strip it back: treat rugby as an invasion game, not just a technical sport. The priority was making sure pupils could Do More, Know More, and Remember More. There were curveballs before the session even began: Class numbers dropped from 15–20 to just 10. The lesson was cut from 90 minutes to 40. Adapting quickly became the first lesson, but that’s the reality of teaching. One of my favourite parts was the plenary. Each pupil had a hand outline on paper, and on each finger they answered a question: What did you learn today? What do you need to remember? What could you improve? It was such a simple but powerful check for learning. In football I’ve relied heavily on Q&A and freeze frames, but this method sparked deeper, more reflective answers from the pupils in real time. I left with plenty of questions, answers, and reflections, but also with a real excitement for the journey ahead. Next week I begin my placement, and I’m ready to fully dive into this training and grow into becoming a qualified teacher by summer 2026.
