What Conan touches on here is, in my view, the most fundamental principle that should guide our politics. Our society pays tribute to merit and hard work (and it should), but we don't acknowledge that, more than any other force, it is luck that determines our fate. A society that recognizes how much each person's life is determined by forces beyond his/her control will be structured differently. And will be a much kinder place.
