And here is one from the "other side" of the debate. Even here, my guest @HSB_Lab says that "the evidence does not support the strong Hobbesian position" that war was constant and chronic in the Palaeolithic.
This said, you might be right that peace takes a lot of effort @SpencrGreenberg . Let's keep making the effort!
The story of China is not just the story of one nation. It is the story of a large chunk of humanity — a quarter of our species at times. And that story is now shaping the century ahead.
Would you like to understand this story better? You will struggle to find a better place to start than the work of @YashengHuang!
I have finally finished my summary of our long conversations with him and @jordanschneider
Check it out!

Are universal human rights a "Western" idea rooted in Kantian philosophy? Hard debate. But it's good to remember that a Chinese intellectual, P.C. Chang, worked as the vice-chair of the 1948 drafting committee and incorporated Confucian ideas into the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. And while the attached quote is a bit simplistic, he is absolutely right on one thing: Enlightenment thinkers were busy reading Asian philosophy.
I'm unsure what all this means. But it sure doesn't conform to the typical stereotypes about #humanrights, #China, and #Asian#philosophy!
(Quote from @IngvarHans's concise intro: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.11…)
Yes, climate change drove human evolution. And this isn’t just a story of jungles turning into savannas. If the graph below is anything to go by, both human biology and human culture evolved to cope with increasingly dramatic climate swings.
I’m not sure what this means for our time… But I feel it’s worth knowing anyway!
PS. This is from an excellent talk by Larry Barham at @CARTAUCSD 's symposium. I highly recommend checking this out! youtube.com/watch?v=jK9Pyk…
A juicy turning point in the making of the “Western civilisation”: An Italian priest arrives in a majority-Muslim town and makes a local friend. Together, they translate not only Aristotle but also Arabic works introducing students to a new number system from India — a system so powerful it can express any number with just nine digits and a zero. Despite their efforts, old Roman numerals persist in Europe until Fibonacci learns about algebra while living in northern Africa. He popularises the decimal system in Italy, where it paves the way for the revolution in banking.
(I might add that the action takes place on dried wooden pulp called "paper"—a method the Arabs learned from the Chinese.)
An excellent moment from @DalrympleWill 's “Golden Road”! I’ll post some more thoughts on the book later this week. Thoughts? Comments?
