@coophonestan climbing the social and economic ladder while the princess had to come down to understand her people and be a proper ruler. Also when the princess writes a letter scented with lilies, lilies means death & danger so it was the princess' way to let her tutor know she was in danger

@coophonestan I heard recently that the writers/directors of the movie showed the pauper only going up (up stairs, up hills, etc) whole the princess is seen going down (down stairs, down hill, down yo the mine shafts, etc) with the intention to communicate that the pauper's life was on the up,
