From First Class Degrees to Formulating Confidence: My Journey in Nigerian Skincare Hello, my name is Olawunmi, and I’m a Natural Skincare Formulator based in Nigeria. My path to skincare formulation wasn’t a direct one. With First Class degrees in both Petroleum Marketing and Full Marketing, many assumed my career would be in the oil sector – perhaps at a company like NAPIMS, where I last worked. However, my passion pulled me in a different direction. Driven by a desire to help others regain their skin confidence, I chose the entrepreneurial path, establishing my own skincare formulation business from home. The transition wasn’t without its hurdles. Stepping away from the corporate world meant venturing into business ownership without a deep initial understanding of brand building or customer relationship management. My primary challenge, however, was in the technical aspects of formulation. Initially self-taught, relying on online resources because formal training felt financially out of reach, I focused intensely on safe production practices and creating simple, effective products. This commitment carried me forward, but I knew deeper knowledge was essential for growth. A significant turning point arrived in 2024 when, after dedicated saving, I enrolled in the Olay Skincare course on Coursera. This experience was transformative. It profoundly enhanced my expertise in advanced formulations, ingredient sourcing, understanding the specific benefits of individual ingredients, and overall product management. More than just skills, the course instilled a new level of confidence in my abilities and solidified my commitment to excellence in natural skincare. Navigating the Nigerian business landscape presents unique challenges. Economic conditions made saving for further education, potentially abroad, a slow process. Furthermore, the misuse of the term “organic” by some selling harmful bleaching products created misconceptions about genuine natural skincare, impacting consumer trust. Overcoming these external pressures required resilience and a steadfast dedication to ethical, effective formulation. Today, I am proud of the journey and the expertise I’ve cultivated. I am more equipped than ever to create high-quality, natural skincare solutions and am excited about the future of my brand and the positive impact I can make on my clients’ lives. I’m always open to connecting with fellow formulators, industry leaders, and potential clients who share a passion for authentic, natural skincare.
