#Pittsburgh's Civic Arena during opening ceremonies on Sept. 17, 1961. (Morris Berman/Post-Gazette)
@OddPittsburgh Way ahead of its time. Miss it so much.
@OddPittsburgh My very first concert was the Civic Arena & Chubby Checkers was the headliner!!! 1963 I think🤔🤔
@OddPittsburgh and that roof was RARELY ever opened, talk about lack of featuring a 'feature, would have been awesome to have that open during a Pens game, concert or NCAA tourney game
@OddPittsburgh How many times was that roof opened?
@OddPittsburgh Brilliant concept (open roof) that never functioned properly.
@OddPittsburgh @dfkpgh Played hockey there once. About 1978.
@OddPittsburgh My mother's father was on the design team. At home they called it "Pop's Ulcer".
@OddPittsburgh I remember people who were afraid to go inside for fear the roof would collapse.
@OddPittsburgh My Mom took me to see Yul Brenner in "The King and I" there, theatre in the round. It was magical and I saw a lot of other cool events there but that one sticks out.
