This is Namiji, a 42-year-old Christian farmer and carpenter, was once the bedrock of his small community in Karamai, Maro Ward, Kajuru Local Government Area. That was before the Fulani Ethnic Militia came on April 28, 2024. They didn't just abduct him; they tore him from his life, plunging him into a nightmare that would shatter his body and spirit. The first two weeks of his captivity were a living hell, but the true horror began when some of the captives managed a daring escape. Blinded by a savage rage over the loss of their prisoners, his captors turned their fury on Namiji. They didn't just beat him; they methodically destroyed him. Using their guns like clubs, they smashed his legs, pulverizing bone and tissue in a deliberate act of cruelty. To ensure he would never run, they wrapped a heavy, rusted chain tightly around his shattered right leg, the cold metal grinding into the open wound with every agonizing movement. They left him there in the bush, broken and discarded, a final, brutal message. The break was catastrophic. His right leg was not merely broken; it was crushed. By the time he was finally released, weeks of neglect had turned the injury gangrenous. The skin on his leg, a mottled canvas of purple and black, had begun to rot away, peeling back to reveal the ravaged flesh beneath. A constant, thin stream of yellowish pus, mixed with watery blood, oozed from the wound, carrying with it a sweet, acrid stench of decay that clung to him—a horrifying testament to the living death he had endured. He could not walk. He could not stand. He could not even crawl to relieve himself. For his most basic human needs—to urinate, to move from the filth he had to call out for his mother. His over-90-year-old mother, a woman who should be resting in the twilight of her life, was forced to become his nurse. Since regaining his freedom, Namiji Mairiga has been abandoned. He has received no medical care, no humanitarian aid, nothing to ease his physical agony or the deep psychological scars. He is a ghost in his own life, trapped in a cycle of pain and despair, his only lifeline the woman who gave him life. EquippingThePersecuted.org deployed the funds and transportation to cover Namiji's medical care. Please pray he can keep his leg. He is one of several kidnap victims that we have assisted this week. The first big money I ever earned in my life was a ₦225,000 Chevron Scholarship towards the end of my 2nd year in college. I gave ₦25,000 as tithe, I gave a classmate ₦12,000 to pay for sickle cell treatment of his sister, I gave fellow struggling students like me different amounts, some got ₦500, some ₦5,000...then I got myself a used laptop and plenty of books. Before this time, the highest amount my bank account had ever seen was ₦10,500. Receiving over 20 times that amount at once was crazy. By the time I was done giving, I still had over ₦125,000 left. Yet, a year after that, the money had doubled to ₦250,000 as more scholarships from various sources flowed in. That experience reinforced a belief I had then and that I still have now: my money is not really mine. I'm just a custodian of it. This is why it is so hard for me to buy things for myself but I find it so easy to give it away. When I moved to the U.S. and started earning in $, it was a no-brainer for me to continue the practice that has served me so well. Same as when I started in Shell and started making real money. For about 10 years now, the biggest line item in my personal finances is not taxes, or mortgage, but donations - to God, to charity, to causes I believe in and to the needy. Last year, my CPA said, "you give more away than most households in the US earn." I believe you can give your way to prosperity. To grow, you need to let go. Tithing is a good first step in learning to let go.

Big Mack, you’re my brother. And while you’ve declared yourself an atheist, at least that is how you’ve presented yourself here, I know that almost nothing I’ll say will make much sense to you. Yet it is imperative that I say it. Christianity or Islam is not some alien identity that Africans wear like borrowed clothes. Both faiths have been here for centuries, longer than the modern states we now call “African countries.” Before colonization, before Berlin, before the flags you wave, these religions were already embedded into the fabric of towns, markets, kingdoms, and families. They have been translated, interpreted, and lived through African tongues, African rhythms, African suffering, African hope. To tell an African Christian or Muslim that they are “misguided” for saying “we Christians” or “we Muslims” is to misunderstand how identity works. Identity is not frozen in bloodlines. It is formed through belief, practice, and belonging. When a Yoruba man kneels to pray at a mosque in Ibadan, he is not an Arab. When an Igbo woman sings hymns at dawn in Enugu, she is not a Westerner. They are Africans living their faith through African bodies, African cultures, African histories. You ask “you and who?” when we say “we Christians” or “we Muslims.” The answer is simple: we and everyone else who believes as we do. That is what “we” means. It is not “we and the West” or “we and the Arabs.” It is “we and fellow believers,” some of whom happen to be African, some of whom happen to be Asian, European, Arab, or Latino. Faith is not a tribal passport. It transcends the borders you are trying to draw. The irony is that by rejecting Christianity and Islam on the grounds that they are “foreign,” you are still defining African identity through someone else’s lens. You are still letting the West and the Arabs set the boundaries of what you can or cannot believe. True freedom would be to choose, and if what you choose happens to be Jesus or Allah, that does not make you less African. It makes you human. Africa’s problem is not that it has Christians or Muslims. Its problem is bad leadership, poor governance, greed, and weak institutions. If Christianity and Islam were enough to erase African identity, then why are African churches filled with African drums and African languages? Why are the mosques in Kano alive with Hausa sermons, Hausa songs, and Hausa understanding, not Arabic alone? We have already indigenized these faiths. We have made them ours. That said, Big Mack, I get where your frustration comes from. You wear your heart on your sleeve, your passion is undeniable, and it’s easy for many to mistake that passion for control. Yes, we both want a better Africa, but faith is not the enemy. Policing people’s faith will not liberate this continent. You can be a Christian and still demand good governance. You can be a Muslim and still fight for justice. You can be an atheist and still fail at both. It is not faith that enslaves; it is the heart that wields it wrongly. So before you tell Africans to ‘go find their identity,’ understand this: for millions of us, Christianity or Islam is not an imported costume. And here is the irony, I am not even the perfect example of what a Christian should be, yet I know that faith here is no borrowed garment. It has been woven into our lives, our tongues, our histories. Not by the white man alone. Yes, they brought it. Yes, they painted our native faiths as dirty and sinful. But at the end of the day, our people still chose. Perhaps from a place of pressure, perhaps even from a place of brainwashing, arguably so. Yet they chose. And that choice is everything. And that choice, Big Mack, does not make us less African. It makes us Africans who have chosen, in our own way, a path to meaning. For in the end, the dignity of a people is not in what was brought to them, but in what they chose to keep.
