These signals are recognized by soluble receptor peroxins (PEX5 and PEX7, respectively) that interact with the receptor docking translocation module (DTM) at the peroxisomal membrane. This translocation machinery can import folded, co-factor-bound and even oligomeric proteins!

How peroxisomes import their proteins? Peroxisomal matrix proteins are synthesized on cytosolic ribosomes and then post-translationally imported into peroxisomes. Proteins destined to peroxisomes harbour peroxisomal targeting signals — PTS1 or PTS2. (Continues below 👇)

How did peroxisomes get their name? In 1954, Rhodin described "microbodies" using electron microscopy studies of mouse kidney. These "microbodies" were small structures characterized by a single lipid bilayer membrane and a finely granular matrix. (Continues below 👇 1/3)
