A New Species of Blue Mushroom Discovered in Taiwan Scientists have recently discovered a new species of mushroom that has a striking blue color. The mushroom, named Mycena subcyanocephala, was first described in a paper published in December 2019. It was found in Taiwan by a team of researchers from the National Taiwan Normal University and the National Museum of Natural Science. The blue mushroom is one of the smallest mushrooms in the world, measuring only about 1 mm in height. It grows on decaying wood and prefers humid environments. The blue color of the cap is caused by a pigment called cyanophyocyanin, which is also found in some algae and cyanobacteria. The color can persist in mature specimens, although it may fade to pale blue or grayish-white. The discovery of this new species adds to the diversity and beauty of the fungal kingdom. The researchers hope that their findings will inspire more interest and conservation efforts for these tiny and fascinating organisms. In October 2023, another study revealed that some Mycena fungi, including M. subcyanocephala, can colonize living plants and even form mutualistic relationships with them. This suggests that bonnets are in the process of an evolutionary development, from uniquely being decomposers of nonliving plant material to being occupants of living plants, under favourable conditions.
