#OTD in 1960, USS Triton completed the first submerged circumnavigation of the world while under command of CAPT Edward Beach, Jr. Starting and ending at the St. Peter and Paul Rocks in the Atlantic, the Triton traveled 26,723 nautical miles in 60 days and 21 hours.
@NavalInstitute 26,723 nm / (60 days x 24 hrs/day) = 18.6 knots average speed
@NavalInstitute He also wrote some fantastic books!
@NavalInstitute When we first moved to Seattle in 1996, the Triton was out of service at Bremerton's Navy Yard. It was moored under the overhang of an aircraft carrier, in sorry, rust-covered shape.
@NavalInstitute Wild how just a few decades before the Great White Fleet did something similar and took longer, had more problems, etc. Nuclear power is boss
@NavalInstitute Bit of a random question, but, were there any personnel serving aboard USS Triton during Operation SANDBLAST who had also served aboard USS Nautilus when she conducted Operation SUNSHINE, the first submerged transit of the North Pole?
@NavalInstitute I've always been curious what uniform Beach was wearing on TRITON. Looks like Army wool. That's not the black CPO shirt, or khaki shirt.
