When USS Missouri bombarded Saddam Hussein's forces in Kuwait in 1991, high-explosive 16-inch shells were chalked with messages of revenge for USS Tripoli and USS Princeton. The two ships had been damaged by Iraqi mines the previous week. #FirepowerFriday
@NavalInstitute Another Forrest Gump moment for me. I was aboard Tripoli when we struck the mine and was cross decked to Missouri for the NGFS festival until going ashore as the Iraqi collapse started.

@NavalInstitute x.com/NavalInstitute… Talk about "Sending a Message!" Wish we had modern versions of those big guns in the fleet today. They would come in useful. But times, and weapons, change, along with defense budgets.

@NavalInstitute I was there too; USS HAWES (FFG-53); I had 2 beer days on that deployment and we killed a couple of mines that we almost hit 😳
@NavalInstitute Why is this in Black and white?
