Every successful change begins with a change in mindset and behaviour. That is why NETFUND has taken its conservation efforts to the grassroots, working directly with communities to help them understand what is at stake and the important role they play in environmental restoration. I hosted a delegation from the Republic of Korea led by EWC Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Jinyong Kim, who are undertaking a feasibility study on integrated waste management in Kiambu County. Our discussions focused on deploying appropriate plastic waste recycling technologies, establishing Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) across Kiambu County's six municipalities; Thika, Ruiru, Kikuyu, Karuri, Limuru and Kiambu Town and exploring sustainable financing mechanisms to support county governments in the management of these facilities. We also deliberated on the possibility of scaling up the initiative to other counties within the Nairobi Metropolitan region, including Kajiado and Machakos. I reaffirmed the Government's commitment to supporting this transformative initiative and pledged to engage the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) together with the County Government of Kiambu to facilitate its successful implementation. Further, I underscored the State Department's commitment to fast-tracking the implementation of this project, recognizing its potential to address Kenya's growing waste management challenges while unlocking opportunities for resource recovery, circular economy practices, job creation and sustainable development.

Our discussions underscored the critical role of science and innovation in shaping development interventions, strengthening climate adaptation, mobilizing sustainable financing for long-term resilience, and enhancing value chains. We also explored opportunities to ensure that research continues to inform evidence-based policies and decision-making. This engagement reaffirmed our shared commitment to fostering strong partnerships that translate research into practical solutions, accelerate climate action, and deliver lasting socio-economic and environmental benefits for the people of Kenya. #ClimateAction #EnvironmentalAction

Happening Now : H.E. Mama Rachel Ruto, First Lady of the Republic of Kenya, arrives in Marindas Restoration Area of Bararget Forest, in Kuresoi North where she will lead a landmark environmental conservation and livelihoods initiative under the Mau Forest Complex Integrated Conservation and Livelihoods Improvement Programme (MFC-ICLIP). The First Lady is hosted by Dr. Eng. Festus Ng’eno, Principal Secretary, State Department for Environment and Climate Change and Patron of MFC-ICLIP. She is accompanied by national and county leaders including Cabinet Secretaries Dr. Deborah Barasa (Environment), Ms. Hanna Wendot Cheptumo (Gender), Amb. Canon Dr. Ida Betty Odinga, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kenya to UNEP, Principal Secretaries Mr. Gitonga Mugambi (Forestry) Aurelia Chepkirui Rono (Parliamentary Affairs) Kuresoi North MP Mutai Alfred, Green generation initiative Elizabeth Wathuti - Liz Mazingira among others. During the visit H.E. Mama Rachel Ruto will officially adopt a 31-hectare restoration block within the Mau Forest Complex, plant ceremonial indigenous trees as well as commission a one-million-seedling tree nursery, underscoring her commitment to large-scale ecosystem restoration and climate action. The delegation will then proceed to Baringo Primary School, where the First Lady will commission a biogas unit, a kitchen garden, waste management facilities and flagging off fruit tree seedlings for women farmers. To culminate her visit the First Lady will launch One Tourist, One Tree Initiative” by the Kenya Tourism Board a partnership between MFC-ICLIP and Kenya Tourism Board. These efforts reaffirm government commitment to environmental conservation, food security, sustainable livelihoods and community empowerment. NETFUND and ILO Partner to Advance Green Jobs and Sustainable Environmental Solutions The National Environment Trust Fund (NETFUND) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Labour Organization (ILO) at NETFUND offices, marking a significant step towards strengthening collaboration in promoting sustainable environmental management, green jobs, and Kenya’s transition to a green economy. The partnership will leverage the mandates of both institutions to support innovative environmental interventions, enhance capacity building, promote research, and mobilize resources towards programmes that advance climate action and sustainable development. Through the MoU, NETFUND and ILO will collaborate in developing and implementing initiatives that support green enterprises, skills development, entrepreneurship, and decent work opportunities, with a focus on youth and women. The collaboration will also support the development of a Just Transition Strategy, knowledge sharing, research on climate change and employment, and technical assistance to micro, small and medium enterprises advancing solutions to environmental and climate challenges. NETFUND participates in the World Desertification and Drought Day Celebrations The National Environment Trust Fund (NETFUND) participated in the World Desertification and Drought Day (WDDD) celebrations held in Kilifi County, showcasing conservation driven solutions that promote sustainable land management, climate resilience, ecosystem restoration, and green livelihoods. NETFUND’s exhibition stand attracted high-level dignitaries and environmental leaders who visited to appreciate the Fund’s work in advancing environmental conservation, supporting communities, and promoting climate action initiatives. The NETFUND stand was visited by Ms. Yasmine Fouad, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD); Dr. Deborah M. Barasa, Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry; Eng. Dr. Festus Ngeno, Principal Secretary, State Department for Environment and Climate Change; H.E. On Wednesday 17th June, 2026, Kenya will host the global observance of 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐲 in partnership with United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification under the theme “𝙍𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨: 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙯𝙚. 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩. 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙚," at Vipingo Central Primary School in Kilifi County. The day is the United Nations’ global moment to raise awareness of land degradation and drought and to mobilize action to protect and restore healthy land. Kenya will be the first in nearly a decade that the African continent hosts the global observance. The global event will spotlight the vital role of rangelands in strengthening climate resilience, enhancing food and water security, conserving biodiversity, and sustaining the cultural heritage and livelihoods of pastoralist and Indigenous communities worldwide. Rangelands cover more than half of the world’s land surface yet remain among the most undervalued ecosystems. They face increasing pressures from climate change, land degradation and competing land uses.
