Schools weaponize student housing contracts to force students to comply with institutional objectives. Campus eviction is uniquely devastating because: - Students pay a year’s rent upfront - That rent is nonrefundable - Many students paid w/ student loans that accrue interest

To put it another way, a school’s eviction of a student will have a devastating financial impact for the rest of the school year—and likely decades into the future as students repay student loans. It can be nearly impossible for evicted students to just “find new housing.”
@NBedera Another reason: Even if being forced to leave isn't a student's choice, they often have to pay a fee for "breaking" their housing contract.
@NBedera My elite university forced me into a mental health "contract" where I had to be medication compliant to keep access to housing. If I could afford to live off-campus, didn't need to be under contract 🙃
@NBedera Because following the rules is so tough
@NBedera The purpose of an institution is to propagate its institutional objectives.
