The NFL competition committee has proposed a new rule that would penalize a player with a 15-yard penalty and grant the opposition an automatic first down for using the hip-drop tackle to bring a runner to the ground. This is the definition of a hip-drop tackle: (a) grabs the runner with both hands or wraps the runner with both arms; and (b) unweights himself by swiveling and dropping his hips and/or lower body, landing on and trapping the runner’s leg(s) at or below the knee. NFL owners meet next week in Orlando.
@MySportsUpdate Incoming more knee injuries as guys will dive straight towards knees at full speed at this point. What is the defender actually supposed to do to get a grown ass man on the ground?
@MySportsUpdate Just bring the flags then take pads off now smh
@MySportsUpdate Say goodbye to knees, because now the defenders are just going to shoulder the quads from now on.
@MySportsUpdate Just play flag football and be done with it.
@MySportsUpdate Man, eventually this is just going to become flag football.
I actually like the idea of negating the hip-drop tackle: The hip-drop rewards defenders for making out-of-position tackles. Football is a chess match. Get your guys in position and you won’t need to use the hip drop tackle. Imagine running full speed and 250Lbs immediately begins to anchor you without your body being able to brace for it, hence it’s coming from behind. That’s no good for player safety, right? Am I misinterpreting the concept?
