@incisorial @CoastalPaleo @SavannahSciArt You may not have used the word "real," but the implication of your statement was that fieldwork is necessary for ethical practice, which for those who want to practice ethical science amounts to the same thing. I'm simply asking you to be conscious of this.

@incisorial @CoastalPaleo @SavannahSciArt @boesse We're both talking about ethics, you just view one as more important than the other and I view them as equally important. I'm not saying pillage-and-publish is good, I'm saying that requiring fieldwork "or maybe something else if you can't I guess" is also unethical.

@incisorial @CoastalPaleo @SavannahSciArt It's not patronizing to point out that there might be absolute badasses in the field who can't do fieldwork. No one is saying that queer/Black/Brown/disabled folks cannot possibly do fieldwork, but SOME can't. Canonizing fieldwork as the end all be all excludes them.

@incisorial @CoastalPaleo @SavannahSciArt Yes, I understand that. However, you fail to recognize my point, which is that placing a preference on fieldwork others those who can't participate. Collections management, conservation, cataloguing, prep work are all vital to the sustainability of the field.

@incisorial @SavannahSciArt @CoastalPaleo I’m not sure it’s a separate conversation. If we treat fieldwork as a preferred part of paleo practice, those who can’t meet that preference are othered and treated as less than for no other reason than they can’t or don’t want to do fieldwork.

@CoastalPaleo @incisorial That I can definitely agree with. If everyone does what they're capable of, and expectations aren't put on those who already deal with extra expectations due to sexism/racism/xxx-ism, the field grows and thrives.
