Think about the collapse in civility in UK political discourse and all roads lead back to Brexit. Designed by Tories, to solve an internal Tory problem. Killed moderate Toryism. Rocket-fuelled the far right. Rebranded racism as 'legitimate concerns'. Shame on them, forever.
@MrPMHarrison Indeed #Brexit has been a strategic failure for the #UK
@MrPMHarrison 100% correct - the behaviours around Brexit have ushered in an era of downright lying and division.
Your memory is very poor. Europe, or France and Germany, constantly voted us down and European companies bought ours, shifted the core to Europe and closed down the British businesses time and time again. Europe is no friend of ours and I’m very glad we left. We effectively deserted a sinking ship and gave ourselves a chance to rescue some of our own ground. The EU is in socialist, self inflicted decline and Argentina’s president Millei explained how they’re doing it in his speech to Davos. European people are still our friends, but their governments are a menace.
@MrPMHarrison What utter codswallop. Brexit was a democratic vote that you lost. The real issue is that 4 years after it, the remainers still haven't accepted it. Remainers are to blame that don't know when they have been defeated fairly at the ballot box and set a bad example.
@MrPMHarrison I voted Remain as I genuinely thought we were better in EU but I don't think its helpful to brand everyone who voted leave as 'far right' - you're stoking division and hatred as well as vilifing people just because they disagree with you- it's really really lazy!!
@MrPMHarrison Where’s the far-right party in the polls?
@MrPMHarrison I'll go for the Iraq war when government lost its legitimacy
The kind of sentiment you express here is what caused the end to civility: your ill-concealed disdain towards those who had the temerity to disagree with you; the spoilt whines of those who had previously always got their way coming face to face with the vox populi; your smearing of those who wish to retain the largely homogenous society and social trust of a culture they were raised in as "far right"; an unwillingness to lose a referendum gracefully without assuming the worst motives of those who disagree with you for a whole variety of reasons; the bigotry in the loaded terms you use when talking about those who don't share your view. That's what's caused an end to civility. All it needed was for you to accept the outcome of a referendum and to move on or move out. Yet here you are, eight years later, still name-calling, and wondering why you're not met with civility! The shame is all on you and your ilk, forever. You've done untold damage to our politics.
@MrPMHarrison one of the great 'what ifs' for me.. theguardian.com/politics/2010/…
