If we *have to* use spatial metaphors to explain concepts, if schema are always depicted spatially, & if we emphasise connections only with words, doesn't that point to some sort of pedagogical lost opportunity where students could say "ah, I see what you mean!"?
The total amount of (education) research we produce is enormous, too much in my opinion. Obviously that means there's a lot of research of every quality. I think it's ludicrous to generalise about the quality of (education) research.

I'm more guilty than most of presenting schema as neat, hierarchical structures. There are other views. Rosch's prototype theory is particularly persuasive, as is Hoffstadter who fuses analogies & chunking. Whichever you choose to believe, it should be loosely held.

Their desired amount? ~50%. We've got a ways to go. 😬
I worry quite a bit about what % of school for students right now is basically independent work staring at a computer screen—often with headphones on, too.
The pressure we hear from teachers is that they "have to use" the curriculum programs & packages that districts purchase, which are increasingly designed not to be taught so much as delivered, and that delivery looks like sitting in front of a screen w/ headphones on. 😩

@eduleadership I don’t know that I have time to convey my critique in twitter but the fordham report is saying teachers whose grading is aligned to standardized tests produce students who do better on standardized tests. Standardized tests are useful but biased

@TeachPhysicsUK No, I can't show you that because schools, dozens of subjects, don't uniquely adopt one or another approach. I do think that they tend more to the broad Rosenshine EI because that's broad enough to encompass many, many forms of instruction. I don't think there will...
@TeachPhysicsUK I frankly don't even know how to respond because the tweets are so off-topic. I'm sure you think it all makes sense, but it doesn't. But I'll humour you to first respond anyway and then explain why it has nothing to do with the original point.
@eduleadership Not saying we can't get an idea of how to teach well based on research (I'm a PhD student in Education). More saying that education is really hard to make grand statements about because there are competing values and philosophies about why, how, and what we teach. +
@eduleadership So I can make a great case for direct instruction, for example, if I operate in a closed loop system and my goal is a narrow one: showing facts on an exam (and there's a good case for that here and there). +
@eduleadership But what if my goal isn't mastery of facts, but say, problem solving or collaboration? Things get really complicated there because we are now talking about "the point" of education... and there are many, competing points. +
@eduleadership And to close, there are many ideologically loaded think tanks and ed organizations who are not above bias or motivation... if the funding sources are in league with folks who want to defund/dismantle public ed, we have every right to be skeptical.
