Courtroom footage of Julissa Thaler reacting to her life sentence. She shot and killed her son, Eli, nine times just days after gaining full custody of him.
Julissa Thaler, a 29-year-old woman from Minnesota, was convicted of first- and second-degree murder in connection with the death of her son, Eli Hart. The jury only needed two hours of deliberations. Thaler declined to take the stand in her own defense, and her defense attorney, Bryan Leary, acknowledged she participated in the boy’s death but said she was not the one who shot him. Eli Hart’s life was dominated by a custody battle between Thaler and his biological father, Tory Hart. Court records showed Hart was put into foster care after mounting concerns over his mother’s mental health. But Thaler got sole custody less than two weeks before her arrest. After Eli’s death, a judge determined that Thaler was mentally competent to stand trial and can assist with her own defense. When Thaler was asked if she wanted to address the court, she said, "I’m innocent. F— you all. You’re garbage,". After the sentencing, the family said they were focusing on fundraising for a playground in Eli’s honor. Tory Hart filed a wrongful death suit against Dakota County employees who awarded custody to Thaler. That case is scheduled for trial in federal court in 2024.
