I just capped off a day of NCAA Tournament Basketball by watching "Hoosiers" for about the 20th time. My dad was a Butler graduate. The Christmas of 1954 we traveled from Texas to my grandparents home in Indianapolis. Earlier that year tiny Milan High had won the state overall championship. One morning he took me over to Hinkle Fieldhouse to see where it had happened. The gym in my hometown had 700 seats. In those days Hinkle held 15,000. I remember getting weak in the knees when we walked in. I'd never been inside a structure that massive. I was afraid the roof would fall in. "What they did was like our little school beating a school from Dallas or Houston," he said. I miss my dad. Everytime I see "Hoosiers" I think about that day we stood in Hinkle Fieldhouse. It's a great memory.
@MikeIrwinPTN Great memories amigo. That is how we felt back home in Brownsville when our teams would be beat teams from San Antonio, Corpus Christi . Small teams but big hearts and never give up attitude.
@MikeIrwinPTN Barbara Hershey's character was right. They should keep Coach Dale.
@MikeIrwinPTN I wish Arkansas AAA would bring back the Overall State Tournament where each classifications champion played. In 1979 Parkdale won. If anyone has ever been to Parkdale, you’d understand how big that was. There is NOTHING in Parkdale.
@MikeIrwinPTN But I only played High School and on my ship's team while in the Navy cruising the Pacific for 2 years
@MikeIrwinPTN The DVD I have of “Hoosiers” came with a video of the 1954 Indiana state championship game.
