A new tool from @Shrchandr in my lab extends the existing Bellymount technique from @LOBrienLab's lab to allow for long term repeated imaging of subcellular details of structures within the abdomen of a of a live, fed fly. She's using it for oogenesis. biorxiv.org/cgi/content/sh…

I decided about 1-2 years ago that I would start asking more pointed questions at internal faculty meetings and the such, which should be a relatively safe setting to provide critical feedback. I think the response has been mixed at best.
I concur. I always hope for a robust questioning of my work when I present. And often I don’t get it. But it’s not bc people necessarily agree as evidenced by often harsh anonymous reviews of the same work. I wish we normalized sharp questioning wo it being personal & ad hominem.

👇 Our new work on how cells regulate checkpoint recovery. Many studies have shown how cells turn on the DNA damage checkpoint, but less is known about how cells turn off it to reverse the stress response. Check out the preprint for new insights. 1/ biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
I generally agree with most of this thread. And when I started, I tried to make everything very goal-oriented. But I have found that due to constantly shifting goalposts, goal-oriented decision making is actually quite poor. Set a time limit. If it isn’t working by then, quit.
