Called last night at 1am about an almost pan-resistant organism. First time in ages since I've needed to remote in and review all the microbiology at night to formulate a plan. I wonder if the rest of healthcare appreciates how common these organisms are becoming and the
devastating consequences of organisms that effectively are bringing us back to pre-antibiotic era. (NDM E.coli also likely underlying ESBL - only options fosfo IV or colistin - cefiderocol R amongst every else - no Ceftaz/avi - aztreonam synergy performed).
@Microbedoc2 Was this on a patient sample? D you ever try substances like taurine and ALA?
@Microbedoc2 They've begun to add iron chelators to the 'mix' and getting results. The theory behind it was, since humans deprive iron from pathogens, and pathogens have not evolved to escape this, then adding more iron deprivation should .. and voila .. does work.
@Microbedoc2 can antibiotics used in factory farming of poultry, beef, and swine be a contributing factor to these antibiotic-resistant organisms?
@Microbedoc2 May I ask what specialty tbey were under? Haem Onc? Other? Or a repatriation from abroad?
@Microbedoc2 Do you think retired ID physicians will be more likely to get MDR GNB infections due to the large number of cases we consulted on?
