At my first grammar school (1957-1962) there was the Christian assembly in the school hall, and separate 'meetings' or mini-assemblies where Catholic students and Jewish students met. There was also provision made for students who opted out altogether. We all met up at the end.

@MichaelRosenYes Secondary modern in 60s the few catholics were separated out and everyone else made to be CoE, no one allowed to be atheist, no other religions in our country village. It felt odd that the catholics were excluded from singing “all creatures” and other hymns.
@MichaelRosenYes My secondary school (1975 - 1980) had compulsory C of E assembly. There was no concession for any other religions or atheists.
@MichaelRosenYes That was Harrow Weald Grammar right? I went there 10 years after you. How I envied the Jewish kids and the Catholics who just mucked around for half an hour while the rest of us were bored stiff
@MichaelRosenYes Same at my Sec Mod 1959-64 - didn’t seem to be a problem…
@MichaelRosenYes Same at my comprehensive similar time
