Right. Let’s examine the evidence presented here, because it is genuinely magnificent. A country where roughly four percent of people own a passport has concluded, with total confidence, that it is the greatest civilisation in human history. And the proof? A European tourist enjoyed a Waffle House at one in the morning. That’s it. That’s the smoking gun. Not life expectancy. Not healthcare. Not the small matter of $39 trillion in debt. No. A man who has actually seen the world found a 24-hour diner with laminated menus quite jolly, and somewhere in middle America a chap nearly wept with patriotic pride. And he’s getting this from Fox News. Which is a bit like getting your restaurant recommendations from the man trying to sell you the restaurant. The entire network exists to convince Americans that everywhere else is a freezing Soviet breadline, so that none of them ever get curious enough to buy the passport and have a look. Tiny, sad flats. Depressing grocery stores. Described in vivid detail by a man who has, at a generous estimate, never been. And here’s a detail nobody on that side seems keen to mention. This World Cup is the third in a row handed to a country with, shall we say, a complicated relationship with democracy. Russia. Qatar. And now America. FIFA does love a host that doesn’t ask too many awkward questions. Here’s the bit he can’t quite process. We’ve been to America. That’s the whole point. We came, we saw, we had the hash browns, we got back on the plane, and we went home to the tiny sad flat with the universal healthcare and the six weeks holiday. You don’t envy a place you’ve never seen. You envy a place you’ve seen and can’t get back to. And nobody is pressing their face against the glass trying to get back into a f Buc-ee’s.

If you are debating whether to get your kids the chicken pox vaccine, I would like to tell you a story. When I was 5 I got chicken pox. No big deal. I was sick for a couple of days and then went on with my life. But what I didn’t know as a 5 year old kid was I had been entered into the world’s shittiest lottery. 30 years later, my number came up. If you don’t know about shingles, it is a condition that causes a horrible blistery rash and fiery, stabbing nerve pain. Most people get theirs on their torso. If you are unlucky you might get it on your face. If you are EXTREMELY unlucky like I am, you can get it on your genitals. So there I was (on my goddamn birthday) at the first of two consecutive ER visits, crying in pain when I was diagnosed with shingles. I was given antiviral medication and each day a shot of fentanyl. That’s right, fentanyl. The pain was so egregious they gave me the same pain reliever they gave my stepfather after OPEN HEART Surgery! I CANNOT overstate the excruciating agony I was in. I was given a prescription for Vicodin. I spent the next 7 days curled into a fetal ball on my mother’s couch. I did not eat and I barely drank because otherwise I would have to use the bathroom. Let’s say, that was something I would do anything to avoid. 7 days of absolute, unrelenting misery. I am telling you this story because if you can spare your children from being entered into the shingles lottery, you really should. The chicken pox vaccine prevents more than just chicken pox. Chicken pox is not a problem. Shingles most definitely is.

Here are excerpts, courtesy Raw Story: #Inauguration2025 😳👇 Asawin Suebsaeng, a senior political reporter for Rolling Stone, attended the twice-impeached convicted felon president's rally Sunday at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., and he found that he kept involuntarily scribbling “this is hell, we live in hell, I’m in Hell” over and over. "The jubilant Village People aside, this is a scenario that we were raised and taught in our schools to believe was not practically or legally possible in our time," Suebsaeng wrote. "This is, we were assured at school, something that occurs in Europe, especially in bygone decades of empire, world wars, and global cold war. Maybe it’s something that unfolds during the democratic backsliding of Latin American nations, particularly the poorer ones. The Middle East. The Philippines. Other places we can’t locate on a map without cheating or a hint, and in countries and regions we can barely deign to pronounce correctly." "Not here," he added. "At least that’s what we were told again, and again, and again, and then again." Given what Trump did in his final year in office during his first term, Suebsaeng wrote, a second term should have been unimaginable. Trump and his team boasts that he mounted the “greatest political comeback” in American history, a claim that disgusts Suebsaeng. "They are not entirely wrong — though there is a casual depravity to talking about it, like it’s part of a Friends-replacement TV show that Trump used to star on, instead of the abomination that it is," Suebsaeng wrote. "But no matter how venal or fascistic Trump is, he was never the sole author of this violent tragicomedy that we’ve endured for a decade, and will continue to endure for years. One morally vacant aristocrat could not have accomplished today on his own." Trump's comeback is the result of a collapse and failure by every major institution, the reporter wrote. "This is all happening because everyone — every one — who was supposed to protect the American people from this failed in the most miserable, unforgivable ways," Suebsaeng wrote. "It was a catastrophic top-to-bottom failure that many millions of people at home and abroad will be living with, now and long after Trump is no longer leader of a nominally free world. Every institution you may have believed had value revealed itself to be for-sale or out-to-lunch."

It seems a lot of American can't conceive why Canadians are not so eager to join the union. I'll give you a few reasons: - We love our country, just you like you love yours. Things can always be better, but this will always be our home and native land. - The climate sucks, but we're used to it, and it can be quite beautiful at times. We have warm homes with warm people, winter sports, and lots of sunshine. - None of my kids have had to do active shooter drills, unlike their cousins across the border. Our cities are the safest big cities in North America. - There is no role for religion in politics. No one cares. - We never have to worry about health insurance. Granted the system can be improved, but there are no co-pays, no monthly contributions, few worries. - There's no corporate donations in politics, it was banned 20 years ago. Billionaires can't own the political system. - The media (what's left of it) is not allowed to broadcast false or misleading news. - There's no corrupt geriatric supreme court that can ruin your life. Here judges have mandatory retirement, and few Canadians can name even one of them. - Abortion has been permitted for 35 years and is a non-issue politically - There's no senate or electoral college that can keep unpopular parties in power. - Higher education is good, cheap and accessible. Few are crushed by student debt like in America. There's a million small things too, but overall, this will never stop being the most beautiful place in the world to me:
