@mudwzl @CynicalPublius Also at Balad was a massive equipment abandonment point that seemed to have no rhyme or reason. Some in mill vans, but much just sitting out in the open exposed to the elements.

@CynicalPublius To be clear, I’m not throwing shade specifically at these units. They were put in a difficult position. After a year long deployment, they wanted to get home and did what it took to make it happen. There should have been a better system in place to handle this excess equipment.

What blew me away about my time in Afghanistan and Iraq was the amount of waste. Units would build up incredible stocks of repair parts and other supplies. Then when preparing to RIP out, were told to get rid of it cuz they couldn’t bring all that stuff back. Unit trucks would slip into the dump (usually at night) and off load pallets of equip still new in the packing. Sickening.

I only have experience with the US Army version. I was around for the initial fielding and later saw its sunset when the M17/18 replaced it. Those could get pretty ragged out of course, but I never really liked the M9. Trigger spring or transfer bar spring would fail w/o warning leaving you with a paper weight. Non-replaceable front sight was not a great idea. I assume the civilian versions were somewhat better as they were certainly rather popular.
