The word scouting has lost its meaning in online draft evaluation. It’s a combination of talent evaluation + projection through a blend of eye test & stats Scouting is not a Bart Torvik query. Anyone can do that and luck into being right. Seems that’s been lost lately
This is not a gatekeeping tweet or stat vs eye test tweet Everyone knows a blend of both is the right way to scout. New voices should always be welcome But arrogance of stats being used without contextualizing them ruins the discourse
@MavsDraft “Anyone can do that” is hard to say because as someone that does both sides of this but with football I’d say neither is a skill that anyone can just do
@MavsDraft Efficiency talks with prospects like GG. Sick work
@MavsDraft Also, watching a ton of film does not equal the ability to properly evaluate and accurately project prospects. If you don’t know what to look for or what skills/traits are actually valuable in today’s NBA, then what good is film?
@MavsDraft bart torvik is stats though which is like half of it
@MavsDraft You’re right. A good query provides the hints to further inspection—bread crumbs that should lead to better questions. Public data snapshots can lack metrics that are even more important: shooting efficiency at age, prospect matchups, athleticism marks at height, etc.
@MavsDraft Very very well said and couldn’t agree more! It sucks because saying something like “stats aren’t everything” makes it sound like you’re anti-analytics when that’s not at all the case!
