When someone is sure they have the video game business completely figured out is just the period of time before they're forced to realize they don't.

The elephant in the room here is that if you exclude Activision Blizzard from this quarter, Xbox Gaming revenue is down ~5% YoY with no software & services growth and sharp hardware revenue decline. In other words, you can see why Microsoft sees M&A as essential for growth.
It makes sense to compare to Activision Blizzard’s number in the first year, not to mention that’s one of the reasons Microsoft publishes the numbers in the first place. It wouldn’t make sense after that period. Ultimately what we learn is that growth is still driven by M&A.
