Mad about school closures this week? Failing infrastructure like broken heaters are caused by deferred maintenance. Deferred maintenance is caused by inadequate funding. The #txlege had a $32 billion surplus last year but refuses to fund and fix our public schools.
@MarisaBono Republicans don't care. They really don't care.
@MarisaBono Thanks @GregAbbott_TX Another result of your ungodly hate of public school kids, especially the brown and black and lower economic status kids. But he wields so much power he’s never been held to account.
@MarisaBono In the case of SAISD the blame is entirely due to a long history of corruption and deliberate neglect. For decades the districts reputation was so bad they could seldom pass ANY kind of bond issue. When they did, disproportionately large sums of the money were diverted to
@MarisaBono “Who’d only expertise was their political connections. While school districts like NISD and NEISD were building nationally recognized infrastructure SAISD students were left with aging infrastructure that only got attention when a school closure was too critical to ignore.
@MarisaBono Wait.. wait.. why is that the #txlege responsibility? Government schools are managed locally.. its their job to maintain them
@MarisaBono ahh yes.. bond election after bond election to build football stadiums and auditoriums but your local school board can't seem to find funds to perform maintenance.. and it is the state's fault?
@MarisaBono @TexasAFT In defense of Texas. Heaters are needed maybe 1 week a year, whereas A/C is needed the other 51 weeks. It’s the reverse of Minnesota, most schools don’t have A/C, but they do have heat. But, yes. $32B just floating around the capital is bullsh!t.
