Actually, AI R&D has *3* flavors: 1. Applied AI: developing real-world product. 2. Press Release AI: maximally-impressive splashy demos. 3. AI research: new *published* methods that make the field progress. - 3 feeds into 1 and 2. - FAIR is pretty much entirely focused on 3.
Over the past 10 years, AI has specialized into two domains. "Applied AI" where the goal is to ship products with real-world impact. "Make-believe AI" where the goal is to ship press releases to convince investors and the public that what you're doing is important.
