Yes. Assad’s rejection of the Qatar-to-Turkey pipeline and acceptance of the Iran-Iraq-Syria pipeline was not just a regional energy dispute. It sat inside the larger struggle over who would control Europe’s future energy supply. The Qatar-to-Turkey route would have moved Gulf gas north through Syria and Turkey into European markets. That would have strengthened Turkey as an energy corridor, strengthened Qatar’s access to Europe, and weakened Russia’s leverage over European gas supply. Assad’s refusal was widely attributed to protecting Russia’s interests as Europe’s major gas supplier. The Iran-Iraq-Syria pipeline pointed in the opposite direction. It would have moved Iranian gas westward through Iraq and Syria, reinforcing the Iran-Syria axis and preserving a Russia-aligned energy order rather than creating a U.S./Gulf/Turkey-backed corridor into Europe. Iran, Iraq, and Syria discussed the project in 2011, but the Syrian war and sanctions made it doubtful. So the conflict can be framed as an energy-corridor struggle: U.S./Gulf/Turkey axis: Qatar → Syria → Turkey → Europe Russia/Iran/China-adjacent axis: Iran → Iraq → Syria → Mediterranean/Europe That is why Syria mattered. It was not only a battlefield between Assad and rebels. It was a geographic hinge between Gulf gas, Iranian gas, Turkish transit ambitions, Russian market power, and European energy dependence. When viewed through that lens, Turkey’s incentive becomes obvious. Assad’s decision blocked Turkey from becoming the key southern gas gateway to Europe. It also protected Russia’s position in the European gas market. So Turkey had reason to support an anti-Assad strategy even while parts of the Zarrab/Halkbank channel appeared, superficially, to help Iran. That is the paradox: the Zarrab scheme may have helped Iran at the transaction layer, but the liquidity channel could still serve the anti-Assad project at the geopolitical layer. Syria was the switchyard. Whoever controlled Syria’s corridor controlled whether Europe’s southern gas route would be aligned with Qatar, Turkey, and U.S. strategy — or with Iran, Russia, and the Eurasian bloc. Iran is the hinge. Syria was the switchyard. So the Zarrab/Halkbank affair should not be read only as sanctions evasion. It should be read as part of a covert-finance and energy-corridor struggle over Europe’s dependence: Washington and its Gulf/Turkish partners trying to break Russia’s gas leverage, while the Russia-Iran-Syria alignment tried to preserve it.
