It's gotta be awkward and uncomfortable to believe and support someone who's been thoroughly debunked by Anjali's other friend, Richard Doty, who claims Sands stole the story from a similar one from the 80s.

There's implicit and explicit evidence in Sands' testimony that some of it comes from "recovered memories", which is the same thing as imagination. His mind could have dreamed up memories based on the alien encounter story he heard via Doty or someone else.
