First, there is no credible evidence that George Washington ever said that quote. Historians generally regard it as a misattribution. The quote does not appear in Washington's known writings, speeches, or official records. Second, even if Washington had said it, that wouldn't make it true. That's an appeal to authority. The truth of a claim depends on evidence, not on who said it. Third, history itself disproves the statement. Many modern countries with low levels of religiosity consistently rank among the best governed, least corrupt, safest, and most prosperous nations on Earth. Meanwhile, many governments that explicitly invoke God and the Bible have struggled with corruption, violence, and instability. Good governance depends on institutions, accountability, rule of law, education, transparency, and civic participation, not on whether leaders believe a particular religion. In fact, the U.S. Constitution, the actual governing document Washington helped establish contains NO requirement to govern by the Bible and explicitly prohibits religious tests for public office. So EVEN IF THE QOUTE IS GENUINE, the evidence suggests that effective government comes from good institutions and sound laws, not from adherence to a specific holy book.
