U2’s Bono has once again weighed in on the Israeli Palestinian conflict with an important, nuanced message. The band’s newest EP, released this week, includes a reading of the poem “Wildpeace” by Yehudah Amichai, a giant of Israeli poetry. It also features a song dedicated to the memory of Awdah Hathaleen, a Palestinian activist who was killed by an Israeli settler in the West Bank last summer. Bono once again called out antisemitism unequivocally in an interview as the EP was released. Do I agree with Bono 100 percent? Probably not. It’s not his exact position that feels so refreshing in this moment. It’s his willingness to speak uncomfortable truths without shying away from nuance. And it’s his refusal to participate in the dehumanization of either side to which so many “artists” have become prone. I wish more artists shared that courage.

This shouldn’t be a philosophical debate. It’s a misunderstanding of how infectious disease works. Vaccines aren’t perfect. The measles vaccine is 97% effective with two doses, not 100%, so some vaccinated people remain vulnerable. More importantly, some people can’t be vaccinated at all: infants under 12 months, immunocompromised patients, people with anaphylactic reactions to vaccine components. They depend on the rest of us not spreading a highly contagious virus to them. Measles has an R0 of 12-18, meaning each infected person spreads it to 12-18 others in an unvaccinated population. The virus can linger in the air for two hours after an infected person leaves a room. At that level of contagion, you need 92-95% vaccine coverage to stop community transmission. When coverage drops, outbreaks happen, and the people who pay the price are often those who had no choice in the matter. “My body, my choice” makes sense for decisions that affect only your body. Transmissible disease isn’t that. Your choice not to vaccinate can put a 6-month-old in the hospital or kill an immunocompromised kid who couldn’t get the shot. The question isn’t “why does it matter if I take it.” The question is whether your comfort with risk should override someone else’s right not to get infected by you.

I met a Palestinian economist from Gaza today who was the head of a technical team tasked with preparing the coastal enclave for the “day after” the Israeli disengagement or withdrawal of settlements in 2005. Despite his harsh stance on Israel, he reached out to me and expressed his gratitude for the work I’ve been doing, urging me to keep going and not to give up on Gaza. Most intriguing was the fact that he was commissioned by the controversial Palestinian political figure whose name is regularly floated as part of Gaza’s post-Hamas governance, Mohammed Dahlan. The economist oversaw a large and sprawling team and interacted with Israeli, Arab, and international teams and figures from the World Bank, especially the then-President James Wolfensohn, to prepare the Strip for a new era. Dahlan accurately and prophetically told the economist that “if we don’t get Gaza right following the Israeli withdrawal [in 2005], there will never be a future for the territory and it will be a complete disaster.” Motivated to serve his people and country, the economist shared with me that the World Bank's James Wolfensohn spent his own money to preserve Gaza’s greenhouses and to implement extensive plans to protect what remained of the infrastructure left behind in the vacated Jewish settlements. He mentioned meeting with Hamas to inform them about what the plans and intentions were, but the terror group was ultimately determined to pursue its own course of action. After years of violent attacks during the Second Intifada, Hamas was determined to promote the armed resistance narrative as the reason why Israel was withdrawing from Gaza. The economist, who again is not exactly a dove on Israel, said repeatedly during our conversations that in his talks with Israelis, he sensed “a sincerity” to see Gaza progress and develop, and that Israelis’ attitude was “we don’t want anything from you Palestinians except for you to succeed.” He spoke of incredible plans to spend billions on reviving Gaza’s economy, connecting the territory with the outside world and Israel, and of endless possibilities that would have “transformed Gaza into something truly remarkable,” as he and Dahlan said and believed. Instead, the very day of the withdrawal, he said numerous militias belonging to Hamas were deployed in a disciplined, pre-determined, and militaristic fashion across all vacated Israeli settlements. Worse, he said that Palestinian Authority security personnel tasked with protecting remnants of Israeli settlements participated in the mass looting and destruction of what remained, ending any hope that these spaces would ever serve as springboards for Gaza’s rejuvenation and renaissance. It was then that he called Mohammed Dahlan and told him: “It’s all over – Gaza’s finished.” The 2005 disengagement experiment was a horrific abdication of Palestinian agency and responsibility and a missed opportunity that cannot be solely blamed on Israel. That’s the painful and uncomfortable lesson.

Fraudulent "support for Hamas": There has been a massive outcry and anger by Palestinians in Gaza against Al Jazeera and the PCPSR after the latter carried out a supposed poll, which alleged majority support for the decision to launch the October 7 massacre against Israel, and a supposed overwhelming opposition to disarming Palestinian militias and terror groups. Social media is full of posts that mock the poll and accuse Al Jazeera of using it to polish Hamas’s image, manufacture support and popularity where none exist, and perpetuate falsehoods about Gazans’ support for a terror group that brought so much devastation and annihilation upon them. Interestingly, this particular pollster and his PCPSR have been accused by the Israeli military of publishing doctored and inaccurate surveys in Gaza. In August 2024, the IDF found caches of documents that proved Hamas was systematically manipulating the poll results and hyper-inflating levels of support for its rule, “resistance,” October 7, and actions. Additionally, other polls conducted in Gaza reveal radically different results and show widespread anti-Hamas, anti-militia sentiments. I’ve said this time and again: if you’ve lost your home, your livelihood, your loved one; if you’re in a tent, having to work daily to acquire basic needs, with no way out of this horrendous life; if you’re seeing Hamas’s terror, thuggery, thefts, and mishandling of every aspect of life for two years, you’re not sitting there and thinking “10/7 was the correct choice or yes, I want more of Hamas’s rule and weapons that have destroyed life in Gaza for the past 20 years.” Furthermore, the manner in which these polls are carried out matters immensely, and Hamas’s informants and counterintelligence officers are always on standby to undermine the accuracy of any external opinion gathering efforts. Palestinian society is not free or democratic, especially in the Gaza Strip, which is run by a hybrid mutation of the Taliban, ISIS, and Iraq’s Ba’athist regime. Consider the source: an IDF-discredited pollster; and Hamas’s Qatari media arm, Al Jazeera.

After 15 months in Washington, DC, it has been disturbing to register just how many think tank staff, government workers, and supposed community organizations are actually truly pro-Hamas and opposed to calling out the terror group’s deeply entrenched narrative, because they fashion themselves as “pro-Palestine” voices and activists. Indeed, entities across many political spectrums have leaders who see the big picture and register the horrors of Hamas, the group’s horrendous behavior, consequences of October 7, terrible challenges facing the Palestinian national project, and the dogmatic trends of the past two years, while their leftist junior staff who are younger and more “passionate” about “woke” issues and supposedly “human rights” tend to see Hamas as merely a “symptom” rather than a problem. Despite the best of my efforts to engage a wide-ranging audience of young and aspiring foreign policy professionals in Washington, I’ve come to the realization that many have been profoundly and irreversibly damaged by the indoctrination of Ivy League institutions and expensive schools that adopt social programming and predictably one-sided framing of all of the world’s complex issues and conflicts. These individuals have been especially disappointing and often, quite gross and repulsive, when it comes to demonstrating capacity for nuanced thinking that breaks the binary views and narratives associated with many issues, including the Israel and Palestine conflict, particularly the war in Gaza after the October 7 massacre. Anti-Israel sentiments have become the primary lens through which analyses and opinions are constructed and shared. While individuals have a right to hold whatever beliefs they choose, the goals and aspirations of free thinkers and analysts should be the maximal pursuit of information, evidence, hypotheses, theories, diverse perspectives, and de-personalized discourse. Instead, many end up grossly rushing to tell me how I don’t “conform” to other Palestinian views, and how many “pro-Palestine” voices have problems with me. Instead of Washington DC being a vibrant place for policymaking and the exchange of truly original and free ideas, hordes of non-Palestinian “experts”, “analysts”, junior staff, Ivy League ideologues, brainwashed young people, and detached individuals feel the need to police what I have to say relative to their intransigent rubric for how they assess Hamas, Gaza, the war, and associated issues. I share this in the spirit of highlighting yet another dimension of Washington’s problematic ethos and the issues of young staffers running this city. The detachment between policymakers, young professionals, partisan think tankers, social justice warriors, and Ivy League wokesters is part of the long list of issues that sustain the dysfunction and parallel universes one finds in such an important yet impotent town. The so-called “professional and intellectual” class in Washington, particularly the young staffers in think tanks, government, Congress, and nonprofits, is part of a deeply entrenched industrial complex that inhibits truly transformative policymaking, opting instead for cliquey groupthink that creates a useless, self-affirming feedback loop.
