It is one of the great scandals of our time. Drax, which generates electricity by burning trees imported as pellets from North America, is more expensive than gas, more polluting than coal and more dependent on imports than oil. Yet it is, incredibly, designated as ‘sustainable biomass’, pocketed £870m in subsidies last year and will likely trouser another 2 billion subsidies over the next four years – all to allow Ed ‘The Zealot’ Miliband to include Drax in his net zero calculations. Not just a scandal but an expensive scandal for the taxpayer.

Anyone have a sense of déjà vu? Because it appears Chancellor @RachelReevesMP is falling into the same 'uncertainty' trap as prior to the October Budget. Everyone knows the government needs to pull some new austerity &/or tax raising levers in her 26th March Spring Budget (see below). Which (surprise, surprise) is unsettling business & consumer confidence again, alongside delaying investment decisions. Hence this time, what about instead perhaps engendering some serious productivity improvements across the public sector? Maybe even addressing some public sector 'sacred cows' like removing top rate tax relief on pension contributions (est £10bn pa saving)? Similarly, don't stuff the private sector again!
