Red flags when hiring local SEO help:
Guarantees a #1 ranking.
Won't explain what they're actually doing.
Reports impressions but never calls.
Owns your GBP and won't hand it over.
You should be able to log into everything they touch.
Post every job you finish to your GBP. Two sentences and a photo.
"Replaced a 40 gallon water heater in Mesa this morning. Family had been without hot water since Friday."
That gives Google the location and service, and shows a real person you're busy. A minute at the truck.
Some niches are drowning in fake listings. Locksmiths, garage doors, towing.
If you're legit in one of those, that's your opening.
Real address. Real photos. Reviews with real names.
Google is actively trying to find the real businesses. Be easy to verify.
Test this on your own phone right now.
Open your website. Tap your phone number.
Does it dial?
If it doesn't, it's not a link, it's just text. And you're losing calls from people who won't bother typing it in.
Offering a discount for a Google review breaks Google's policy and it's a bad trade anyway.
You get reviews from people motivated by $20, not by your work.
Ask because you earned it.
If you can't ask without a bribe, that's the actual problem.
Google Search Console is free and most local owners have never opened it.
It shows the actual searches bringing people to your site, not keyword tool guesses but the real queries people typed.
Half your content plan is already sitting in there.
You can upload video to your Google Business Profile.
30 seconds of a crew working. No editing. No music. No script.
Almost nobody in home services does this, which is exactly why it lands when someone's comparing three profiles.
The difference between the contractor who's booked out and the one who isn't usually isn't skill.
It's response time.
Called back in 5 minutes versus called back tomorrow.
Same lead both times. The fast one got the job.
Tree service companies get a demand spike after every windstorm.
Build the emergency page now, before the season.
Storm work photos. Phone number at the top. 24/7 if that's true for you.
That page sits quiet for months, then pays for the year.
You don't need a page for all 40 towns you serve.
Thin, near duplicate city pages are a spam pattern, not a strategy.
Pick the 5 to 8 places you actually want work from, and give each one a real page with real jobs and photos on it.
Sign your review responses with a real name.
"Glad the crew got it sorted before the weekend. Appreciate you. Mike, owner."
Reads like a person, not a template.
Customers scrolling reviews notice which businesses have an actual human behind them.
Wrong hours on your GBP is one of the fastest ways to lose a customer for good.
Google prompts you for holiday hours. Most owners dismiss the notification.
Then someone drives over on Labor Day because your profile said open.
Set special hours once a year.
If Angi or Thumbtack is your main lead source, you don't have a lead source. You have a landlord.
They set the price, sell the same lead to your competitors, and can raise rates tomorrow.
Google Maps doesn't resell your customer.
GBP lets you add a booking link right on your profile.
If you have online scheduling, that's a lead capture button sitting on your listing for free.
Most service businesses leave it empty and hope people call.
Give them both options.
Every job photo on your site should have alt text describing the work.
Not "IMG_4471."
"Asphalt shingle roof replacement in Chandler AZ."
Helps accessibility, helps image search, takes about four seconds per photo.
Your title tag is the blue link people actually see in search results.
Most local sites waste it: "Home | ABC Services"
Try: "Emergency Plumber in Boise | 24/7 Service | ABC Plumbing"
Say what you do, where you do it, and one reason to pick you.
Half the "Best Plumbing Denver" listings in your market are keyword stuffed business names.
It's against Google's guidelines and it works until someone reports it.
The Business Redressal Complaint Form exists for exactly this.
Free. 10 minutes. Sometimes it sticks.
