🔊 When we think of slavery in the U.S., we don’t usually think of the North. Despite the deeply-rooted perception that CT was home to the “good guys,” the truth is far different. Listen to episode 1 of the 'Unforgotten' podcast here: trib.al/tiMic56

Another fascinating story from the @wnpr Unforgotten podcast which came about from the investigative work of the @WitnessStones Project in Guilford, CT. ctpublic.org/2024-03-15/sla…
Brilliant installation at the @ConcordMuseum that recreates the 1827 probate inventory of Thomas Dugan (1747-1827). Born enslaved in Virginia, Dugan made his way to Concord by 1791 and ended his days there a free yeoman farmer, “industrious and a peacemaker.” #VastEarlyAmerica
FYI @SlaveryNorth
The Blackwell Family Tree, the largest family tree in the Library's collections, depicts the genealogical history of an African American family from Virginia from 1789 to the 1970s. It’s 8 feet tall, 6 feet wide & contains more than 1,500 names. Read more: go.loc.gov/WHeV50Qe7pH
I thought I would share.. We’ve had disapproving looks, ‘we are full’, ‘is that your wife’ and many more actions questioning our relationship over the last 40+yrs We haven't wavered! The best way of fighting racism is living your life, standing tall and educating. #Diversity
9/ For those who have been to Germany, the memorials are modeled on their stolpersteine (with the permission of that project).
8/ Here are the participating schools and districts. If you think this is something that would benefit your students and community—and it will—reach out to them. witnessstonesproject.org/those-we-remem…
7/ For far too long, we ignored the enslaved who helped build our communities. The work schools across CT—and elsewhere—are doing with Witness Stones is a small, but important step to restore the lives and honor the humanity of those enslaved people.
5/ Our students poured through these sources (and more), combining their analysis with background knowledge to piece together the world of these long-ignored lives. Today, we honored Dinah and Peter in a ceremony at Ridgefield Historical Society.
4/ Probate inventories and additional property records unearthed more humans enslaved by Scott—but they revealed little else. What were Dinah and Peter like? What did Ann dream of or hope to be? Unfortunately, we can only guess.
3/ The documents themselves are stark. This property record shows David Scott “gifting” his son-in-law a 1 year old child, Lidia (likely separating her from her mother, Dinah). Note how the record says Lidia was “about a year,” as it wasn’t important enough to Scott to record.
2/ Trying to uncover the history of those enslaved in Connecticut is challenging. Unlike Venture Smith, most of CTs enslaved didn’t leave behind extensive written records—so we have to unearth property sales, probate inventories, and other documents to reveal their existence.
1/ Dinah and Peter were enslaved by Ridgefield founder David Scott during the 1700s. Scott enslaved at least 5 people (that we know of): Quash, Dinah, Peter, Lidia, and Ann. Today, his former home (pictured here) is the Ridgefield Historical Society.
We grateful to be partner with Ridgefield Public Schools and the Ridgefield Historical Society to restore the history and honor the humanity of Peter and Dinah!
Really proud of the work our 8th graders did as part of the @WitnessStones program this year. They read+analyzed primary sources from 1700s Ridgefield to tell the story—and restore the humanity—of two formerly forgotten-to-history enslaved people: Dinah and Peter. A 🧵/
