@dwkos@itsfoss Pi's were more cheap and expendable devices (Pi 5 is overpriced). Want to change RAM? Get some soldering skills. Want a different wireless card? Perhaps stick in a USB stick. Want a different GPU? Get a new Pi.
@dwkos@itsfoss Oh boy, have you ever really used Pi's? Perhaps if you only need it as a small server and/or like to play around with GPIO. But it's not a desktop replacement. Good luck asking the "average" user to add a NVMe drive to a Pi 5.
The Argon case for the Raspberry Pi 5 has its issues. It uses POGO pins to power the NVMe drive. Assemble the case completely, especially the case screws, to avoid issues with the NVMe drive. The Argon40 script sets the NVMe drive as the first boot device. youtu.be/JDQsS6iSmfQ
@tom_doerr@yacineMTB@giffmana It's roughly a Raspberry Pi 3, with a better GPU. But Imagination Technologies still hasn't released the open-source GPU driver. And it lacks vector instructions. The Lichee Pi 4A has vectors (version 0.7.1), so it is possible to do some AI (very slow).
@tom_doerr@yacineMTB@giffmana It wasn't Linux (too many posts), but it was RISC-V. Still waiting for the first desktop usable RISC-V computer. VisionFive 2 and Lichee Pi 4A still need a lot of software support. I think it was a bad choice that Framework went with the same SoC as the VisionFive 2.
@turryjustturry@_durandal_1707@Windows Your OPINION is that AI is a gimmick. A lot of people disagree. You said that feature doesn't need an NPU. I added that an NPU can do it more efficiently. Draining a battery is not a nice thing to do with a laptop. So you did say something about the NPU.
@turryjustturry@_durandal_1707@Windows Well, stick to the facts. The NPU is not a gimmick, just a specialized chip to do certain workloads in a more efficient way. I mean, you can do OpenGL on a CPU, but a GPU will do it so much faster. Doesn't make the GPU a gimmick either.
@turryjustturry@_durandal_1707@Windows Anything can be run on the CPU, as long as you are willing to stress the CPU and/or wait long enough. The NPU is way more power efficient for AI workloads.
Example, you can even run Stable Diffusion on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2. github.com/vitoplantamura…
@SuperbPhoenix@Canonical@ubuntu@debian Looks like you are the one that needs to open his eyes. Why is it that all these distros say they are derived from Ubuntu, and not from Debian? There must be a lot of stupid people out there basing their distro on Ubuntu? Now who is the dummy here? But I'm done with you.
