What's clear is that you are poorly informed. NOAA's CPI-adjusted “billion-dollar weather / climate disaster” event tally chart is misleading. ⚠️ The frequency of natural disasters inflicting at least $1 billion in economic / property damages with respect to time isn't a reliable metric to use to assess changes in extreme weather patterns to mount evidence of climate change. What it is evidence of are changes in societal exposure to nature's wrath. To explain why, let's do a thought experiment. 🧠 I want you to consider the two side-by-side photos of Miami Beach, Florida shown on the left. 📸 • The photo on the left side of the comparison shows Miami Beach at 63rd Street in 1925 taken from a small airplane. ✈️ • The photo on the right shows roughly the same shot taken from 3D Google Earth satellite imagery with the most recent capture being from 2019. 🛰️ Now, you might particularly notice that there are now 30-story high-rises along the strip that were not there 35, much less a century ago. This is characteristic of every other densely populated area in the world. And, hundreds of millions of people have migrated to these high-risk, disaster-prone regions. 🏙️ The facts are plain: 🌊 The more people build along the coast, the more they will be susceptible to natural hazards caused by landfalling tropical cyclones (e.g., storm surge, high winds and coastal flooding). 🌧️ The more flood plains are replaced with concrete jungles, the more flooding there will be because grass cannot absorb rainwater. 🔥 The more forests aren't managed with prescribed burning and/or mechanical thinning, the more consequential wildfires will be as people build more housing developments in the western forests of North America. The result? 🤔 The higher societal exposure is to ordinary natural hazards is, then the more damage will be incurred by extreme weather. This translates to an increase in number of “billion-dollar disasters,” even if extreme weather events are not becoming more frequent. As such, natural 𝒉𝒂𝒛𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒔 are more likely to become natural 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔 simply because there is just more stuff to destroy. It doesn't take nearly as much to get a “billion-dollar disaster” today than it did 20 or even 30 years ago. This isn't magic. 🎩🪄 This is just basic arithmetic. 🧮 And, while NOAA's “billion-dollar weather / climate disaster” chart takes inflation into consideration [as it is CPI-adjusted], it does not take into consideration changes in exposure caused by population increase and urban sprawl. Therefore, economic losses must be normalized as a percentage of total GDP. Unless losses are normalized as a percentage of the total GDP (e.g., Pielke & Landsea, 1998; Klotzbach et al., 2018; Weinkle et al., 2018), then to use damage (even if the costs are CPI-adjusted) as an indicator of climate change is disingenuous, at best. 🔗journals.ametsoc.org/view/journals/… 🔗journals.ametsoc.org/view/journals/… 🔗nature.com/articles/s4189… The appropriate metrics to use to determine whether or not there has been an increase in Florida hurricane activity is to examine trends in landfall frequency and corresponding landfall intensity, and there has not.
