The greatest tragedy is that those who claimed to speak on behalf of the poor have repeatedly failed them. For decades, politicians have blamed colonialism, apartheid, capitalism, and business owners for every social ill, yet many of the same leaders have held positions of power and influence for years. The question that must be asked is simple: if the diagnosis has remained the same for thirty years, why have the results become worse? The people are not divided because of some grand capitalist conspiracy. They are frustrated because they have watched promises replace performance. They are tired of speeches that identify enemies but never produce solutions. They are demanding accountability from those entrusted with public resources. That is not class betrayal; it is common sense. It is convenient to speak about the owners of the means of production while ignoring the owners of political power. A government controls budgets, public institutions, state-owned enterprises, procurement systems, policing, education, healthcare, and infrastructure. When these systems fail, responsibility cannot always be shifted to the private sector. Billions of rand intended for development have disappeared through corruption, waste, and mismanagement. Communities do not lack water because of economic theory; they lack water because projects are not completed. Young people do not remain unemployed because of political slogans; they remain unemployed because economic growth has stagnated and opportunities have been destroyed. Before blaming capital, we must first examine the stewardship of public power. The working class has not been turned against itself by business owners alone. It has also been divided by corruption, patronage networks, factional battles, and leaders who place personal ambition above public service. Citizens are increasingly questioning politicians not because they have abandoned progressive values, but because they have witnessed the consequences of poor governance. People who wake up every day without jobs, electricity, safety, or reliable public services are not interested in ideological purity. They are interested in results. Their anger is directed toward those who promised transformation and failed to deliver it. Criticism of political leadership should not automatically be dismissed as manipulation by elites. Sometimes criticism is simply the voice of lived experience. The tendency to label critics as pseudo revolutionaries avoids confronting legitimate concerns. A healthy democracy requires debate, accountability, and self-reflection. When every disagreement is explained as the work of hidden economic forces, leaders risk insulating themselves from criticism. Genuine progress requires the courage to ask difficult questions about policy failures, corruption scandals, cadre deployment, and institutional decline. It requires acknowledging mistakes rather than constantly searching for external villains. A movement grows stronger when it learns from criticism, not when it dismisses critics as enemies of the cause. Economic inequality remains a serious problem and deserves urgent attention. However, acknowledging inequality does not mean ignoring corruption. The two are often connected. Every rand stolen from public funds is a rand taken from schools, hospitals, roads, housing projects, and job-creating investments. Corruption deepens poverty, widens inequality, and destroys trust in public institutions. Therefore, any conversation about economic justice must begin with ethical leadership and accountable governance. Without integrity in public office, even the most noble revolutionary rhetoric becomes meaningless. South Africans deserve a politics grounded in responsibility rather than excuses.

South Africa has severe inequality, poverty, and unemployment. The economic system and those who benefit from it are largely responsible for these problems.
