By DM: Who is in charge of detention in your school, HOY or teacher?
@WhistleblowingT Both, after school faculty detentions given for classroom behaviour. There is a rota so each teacher only does it once a fortnight. In addition there are centralised whole school detentions issued by HOY for corridor behaviour, break time behaviour etc.
@LankyDormers @WhistleblowingT Is that rota for the teacher included in directed time or are they paid extra to do it? Its just that STPCD states that is not part of a teachers contract to work outside the 1265. So why do it?
@dyncudd @WhistleblowingT Directed time We're actually significantly under on directed time hours and it helps us to support each other. Is it the same in the Welsh STPCD?
@LankyDormers @WhistleblowingT Yes they are the same... nasuwt.org.uk/advice/conditi… Being under directed time is a school decision which is a good idea to have for emegencies. Doing rotad detentions does not fit this. You should not need to support each other if SLT ran the school with wellbeing in mind.
@dyncudd @WhistleblowingT It's a faculty decision, different faculties run detentions according to what suits them. As explained there *are* centralised school detentions for behaviour issues separate to faculty detentions for classroom issues. Pupils are expected to complete missing work in ours.
@LankyDormers @WhistleblowingT Ok, so its your choice to do detentions. I get that. Let me ask you this. Do your colleagues get a 'genuine' choice whether they do this free work or not? How many other professions would you expect to work for free? When you say faculty decision... who is 'actually' making it?
@dyncudd @WhistleblowingT Every September we are asked in our faculty meeting whether we should continue with detentions like last year or change it. We all decide to continue. If colleagues can't do their shift, or have an issue with the concept, or are I'll then someone else does it. No prob.
@LankyDormers @WhistleblowingT I think this is the problem. How can someone actually say no each September? How would they feel saying that? How would they be made to feel, if they said I would rather not do that? Just by that scenario even happening they are being pressured. Surely you can you see this?
@dyncudd @WhistleblowingT Agreed, but after continuing this for a while I am not sure I am going to convince you that the system we have isn't awful so I'm just going to leave it here at this point
@LankyDormers @WhistleblowingT Ok, fair enough. Thanks for taking the time to discuss.
