Precedent has been made! @SalfordCouncil is now the first local authority (to my knowledge) to specifically ensure the authority proactively considers medicinal cannabis users and works to block discrimination. Salford City Council resolves to ask the City Mayor to: • Continue to ensure reasonable adjustments will be made for any users of prescription medication, in accordance with the Equality Act, and that council employees and visitors are not discriminated against. • Continue to ensure all relevant officers are aware of CBPMs, licensed and prescribed products, and their legal status, and continue to provide training to relevant officers on how they differ from black-market cannabis, and how to avoid potential discrimination under the Equality Act. • Continue to ensure that ongoing and future Equality Impact Assessments consider all disability and Equality Act impacts, on users of licensed and prescribed medications. • Continue to work with GMP to ensure information and training is given to police officers, and that they are aware of the legal position in relation to use of licensed and prescribed medications. • Continue to work with Salford Housing Associations, NHS Service Partners, schools and other civic partners to ensure that they are aware of the legal position, and do not discriminate against any users of licensed and prescribed medications.

Cannabis in the UK. What’s the hold up? 🪴 Feedback from the Scottish Cross Party Medical Cannabis Group meeting last night. Subject: Pain Despite medical cannabis being legalised in the UK in 2018, only a handful of prescriptions have been issued on the NHS. Why? Ronnie Cowan, a Scottish MP said, no one in Westminster wants to talk about it. They just don’t want to know. “It’s like hitting your head on a brick wall.” A Scottish pain specialist doctor said something similar. The medical establishment just doesn’t want to talk about it. Further, while Random Controlled Trials (RCT’s) are considered the good standard by the medical community, companies don’t want to invest years and millions of pounds into them, without knowing they’re going to have a licensed product at the end. They’re not going to happen. Alison Strath, Scotland's chief pharmaceutical officer, talked about how, while the NHS is totally devolved to NHS Scotland, the medicines they can prescribe are not. It was mentioned that, while NICE won’t allow medical cannabis to be prescribed for pain, they have authorised a vaporiser to be used for administering medical cannabis. She explained there are different rules for medications and medical devices. 🤦‍♀️ There were several presentations by professionals showing the effectiveness and safety, of medical cannabis to treat pain. None of that matters if the government won’t listen. In the end, all agreed something must be done to move forward or, we’re going to meet next year not having achieved anything. But what? In defiance of the UK government, the Scottish government has allowed “safe consumption rooms” where patients can safely consume their drugs under supervision. This in an attempt to reduce Scotland’s overdose deaths. Maybe Scotland needs to go further and ditch the outdated UK 1971 Misuse of Drugs Act altogether. Next meeting is about epilepsy. If the government and medical establishment don’t even want to talk about medical cannabis, you can forget recreational cannabis. @Hannah_Deacon40 @iambillyuk
